Unlock India’s Vibrant Knitting Traditions & Timeless Designs

Knitting can take you places. That idea inspired my new series, The Makers’ Passport. Together, we’ll explore the stories, knitting traditions, and artistry from around the world — one destination at a time.

It’s more than loops of yarn. Knitting is a living record of creativity, passed down through generations. Each stitch, color, and design reflects the people, places, and history it comes from. Through The Makers’ Passport, you can travel with me, discover new traditions, and find inspiration for your own projects.

Why India?

Our first stop is India — a country full of color, texture, and history. In this diverse land, art and craft are part of daily life. While weaving and embroidery have long histories here, knitting is a newer tradition that’s rapidly growing.

Many Indian knitwear designers blend heritage with modern style. Because of this, their work often draws on nature, architecture, and mythology. For example, some patterns include peacock feather motifs. Others echo the carved stonework of ancient temples.

As a result, each piece tells its own story. Together, they show how tradition and innovation can work hand in hand.

Patterns in This Episode

The debut episode of The Makers’ Passport features five beautiful patterns by talented Indian designers:

  • Sabr by Nidhi Kansal – A simple yet striking design with clean lines and textured detail.
  • Lataa by Sandhya S. – Flowing lacework that feels like a blooming garden.
  • Madeira Island Wrap by Jaya – A large, dramatic wrap with bold stitch patterns.
  • Mayur Wrap by Jaya – Inspired by the peacock, India’s national bird, with rich colorwork.
  • Lotus Leaf Capelet & Skirt by Jaya – A versatile set inspired by the lotus, a symbol of beauty and resilience.

Some are elegant and understated, while others are vibrant and complex. All are full of character.

Knitting as Connection

Exploring knitting traditions is more than learning new techniques — it’s a way to connect with people and places. When I knit a pattern from another part of the world, I’m learning from its maker. I see their design choices, feel the influence of their environment, and experience the history woven into each stitch.

In addition, I add my own touch to the piece, becoming part of a shared creative story. Indian designers are doing this beautifully. They honor their heritage while experimenting with fresh ideas, creating patterns that feel both timeless and new.
